Cake scraper: 6 edge profiles for perfect cake sides

Oct 27, 2026 · 7 min read

Short answer: a cake scraper is a flat plate between 1.2 and 8 mm thick with one or two edges cut into a profile. You hold it upright against the side of the cake and turn the turntable, so the profile is pressed into the frosting. On kingscutter.com the STL is generated with the exact sizes you ask for and comes out ready to print.

What is a cake scraper and why does it leave the pattern in the frosting?

A cake scraper, also called a cake comb, is a single-piece tool that runs upright against the side of a cake covered with buttercream, ganache or whipped cream. The toothed edge drags the frosting and opens repeated grooves. The smooth edge does the opposite: it levels the surface.

The advantage over a piping bag is regularity. The tooth always leaves the same depth and the same period along the full height of the cake, so the pattern does not drift. According to our workshop measurement, a tooth with a period under 2 mm is not reproduced by a 0.4 mm nozzle. That is why the kingscutter.com generator never goes below that value: a finer pattern disappears under the first frosting layer.

The finish on the side matters for sales. According to Better Baker Club (2022), 32% of home bakers sell more cakes and cupcakes than any other menu item, and side texture is the first thing buyers see in a product photo.

Which edge profiles exist and what texture does each one leave?

There are 6 profiles and each one produces a different texture on the side. The table sums up what each profile leaves in the frosting.

ProfileWhat it leaves on the cake side
SmoothFlat, even surface: levels the frosting and thins the edge with a chamfer
ZigzagTriangular zigzag with sharp points
SquareRectangular blocks with straight steps, castle effect
ScallopRounded concave arches that bite inward, lace effect
BubblesConvex arches that stand out from the plate, pearl effect
WaveContinuous sine curve, fabric effect

How two edges are combined in a single piece

The scraper has an edge A and an edge B with independent profiles, so one piece gives you 2 textures: flip the plate and you change the finish. The factory setting is zigzag with 20 teeth on edge A and smooth with a chamfer on edge B, the most requested combo.

Two generator rules define the result. Teeth are cut inward from the outline, so the piece never exceeds the size you ordered. With teeth on both edges, each edge can take up to 35% of the width. The chamfer only appears on smooth, straight edges: it leaves a 30% blade thickness and opens a bevel up to 6 mm wide.

Data and sizes: the real generator spec sheet

These values are not estimates. They come from the cake scraper generator that runs on kingscutter.com and from the limits applied to every piece before the STL is exported.

The shape is also yours to pick: rectangle, trapezoid (the top side is 60% of the width) or arch. On the arch the profile sits on the bottom edge and the dome is computed as a semicircle or half ellipse, depending on plate proportions.

How do you choose the size for your cake?

The length sets how much arc you cover per pass and the width sets how much side you reach at once. With those 2 numbers and the cake perimeter, the math is direct.

A 15 cm cake

The perimeter is 47.1 cm. A 200 mm plate covers 42% of the outline per pass, and a 100 mm plate covers 21% with better control on tight curves. For a 12 cm cake, drop to 150 mm length.

A 20 cm cake or larger

A 20 cm cake measures 62.8 cm around; a 210 mm plate covers 33% per pass. On tall cakes, going up to 150 mm width keeps the pattern aligned along the full height without repositioning the plate.

If the side also carries cookie cutters or figures, the kingscutter.com library has ready designs such as two-tier wedding cake and cupcake. The profiled plate follows the same principle as the texture roller, applied to the side of the cake.

How do you generate the scraper in 3 steps?

  1. Open kingscutter.com/app/designer and pick Cake scraper. There is no photo to upload: the product is parametric and the outline is computed in 2D.
  2. Set shape, length, width, thickness and both edges with their profile, depth and tooth count. You can engrave your brand on one face.
  3. Download the STL and send it to your slicer. The piece is a flat plate, so it prints without supports or post-processing.

The cake scraper requires the Studio plan. If instead you want to draw a figure from a written description, that feature uses AI and costs 1 credit.

What material should you print it in and how do you care for it?

The recommendation is PETG, a filament suitable for food contact. FDA eCFR 21 CFR 177.1315 lists the PET polymers and copolymers cleared for food packaging, and EFSA assesses those same materials for food contact in Europe. The scraper touches frosting directly, so the material is not a minor detail.

  • Wash by hand with warm water and soap, then dry before storing.
  • No dishwasher and no hot water: heat warps the plate and ruins the chamfer edge.
  • Do not rest the piece on a hot pan or leave it in direct sun.
  • Store it with the teeth facing up so the points do not bend.

Downloads and plans

The Cutter downloads free and without limit. The other products on the free plan include 5 downloads per month, no card needed. Pro and Studio plans download without limit. Credits do not pay for downloads: they buy designs from the Library and run AI features, at 1 credit per feature.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the difference between a cake scraper and a smooth icing comb?

A smooth comb levels the frosting and leaves an even side. A cake scraper has one or two toothed edges that open grooves in a repeated pattern: zigzag, square, scallop, bubbles or wave.

What sizes does the generator produce?

Length from 40 to 210 mm, width from 30 to 150 mm and thickness from 1.2 to 8 mm. The factory size is 200 x 100 x 2.5 mm with corners rounded at 1 mm.

Does it work on a 15 cm cake?

Yes. A 200 mm plate covers 42% of a 15 cm cake perimeter per pass. A 100 mm plate covers 21% and gives better control on tight curves.

Does the scraper print without supports?

Yes. It is a flat plate that sits fully on the bed, so it needs no supports and no post-processing: print it in PETG and wash it by hand.

Which plan do I need to download the scraper?

The Studio plan. The Cutter downloads free and without limit, and the other free-plan products include 5 downloads per month. Credits do not pay for downloads: they buy Library designs and run AI features.

Can I engrave my brand on the scraper?

Yes. The generator engraves text on one face at a factory depth of 0.6 mm, keeps a 0.8 mm floor and holds a 3 mm margin from any edge.
